Growing up on the border between Texas and Mexico offered conflicting cultural ideas of what I should strive for as a woman. I was expected to be demure, agreeable, and family oriented while valuing education, career success, and independence. As tricky as that could be, one thing was clear. Whether in Texas or Mexico, and even in the moments of agreeable demure, the women wore the pants in the family unit, and sometimes in the business context, too.
