My big sister always ran with the cool crowd. She'd bring friends home, point to me across the room as I looked up from my book, and introduce me: "that's my sister, she reads". Books didn't bring me social capital, but they did bring me bigger gifts. Imagination, mystery, new ideas, and possibilities. Books blew the doors off my limited perspective, and still do.
